Want to innovate?Start telling True Lies. 👀During my freshman year of college, I heard that visionary leaders could paint a picture of the future by telling “true lies.”A true lie, in this case, is a description of the future as told in the present tense. When a true lie is shared with others, and they react with genuine excitement and belief, then you should focus on that version of the future and make it come true. Clearly, this is not a scientific definition, but the concept completely changed my approach to innovation and startups. A few years later, I was busy launching CARPOOL, the nation’s largest college safe ride program to reduce drunk driving. I worked tirelessly and shared details about the organization with my closest friends and mentors every day. I told people that CARPOOL saves lives by providing free, safe, nonjudgmental rides home to students in need. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲I told people that CARPOOL is the go-to model for other colleges and universities seeking to create sister programs. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲I told people that CARPOOL is the best designated-driver program in the country. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲Each of these present tense statements, which were not true at the time, got other people excited. They could envision this future, and they wanted to be a part of it.I made bold statements and then I worked with an incredible team to make them true.Want a better future? One of "light bulb ideas" that has come across my virtual desk is: Want to experience a different car? Rent one! Need a truck for the weekend? Swap for one. RideAlike is a rent or swap platform for people to experience a different ride or access a vehicle, temporarily. P2P renting is not new, but co-founder Zelani B. is approaching the market from a different perspective and offers P2P swapping. Zelani has a ton of energy and ambition. He knows every angle of this business and his passion for the solution shines through.❔ Many people are curious about downsizing or going EV but need to experience it for a period of time before committing; not just a test drive📐 Why drive an enormous SUV or Truck for the few times a year the whole space is needed? AirGarage - Solution for Parking Challenges In this video, AirGarage, a startup that is addressing the parking issues that people face, (particularly in university settings) discusses their personal experiences with parking challenges at ASU. These challenges include long walks in the heat, spot availability, and students losing out on their paid spots during sport events. A survey given to students indicated that students pay an average of $690 for parking yet still have to spend up to 15 minutes walking to their classes. AirGarage offers a solution where drivers can find affordable parking by connecting them with locals such as homeowners and businesses. Unlike their competitors, AirGarage strives to make parking affordable AND easy to find. They plan to expand their business to 50 urban colleges and currently have over 250 spots listed in Tempe, AZ. However, they have challenged this industry in many ways that I do think are good.They, similar to Carmax and Carvana, build scale into everything.They gave customers a choice on how to purchase.They made things easier.Did they make mistakes? Last year, The baby garage achieved a remarkable 112% of planned target with only 86% of forecasted expenses. This isn't a celebration post; it's a recognition of the importance of faith and high governance in times of uncertainty. It's a sweet reminder that every experience we pass through nurtures our perception. We've been too focused on unlocking our limits, raising the bar, holding faith, and allowing the numbers to happen. We understood that limitations are not of our abilities or skills. We pushed ourselves further to focus on our own contribution and growth as a team and people after the same goal. Challenges could come in the form of limited access to resources or the failure of old recipes that no longer match our ever-changing surroundings. But, just as we do, we need to keep resilient and cope with changes as we flow. Moral of the story... the journey is all about the lessons we learn, the traits we acquire, and the experiences we shuffle, making each milestone - no matter failure or success - a new destination where we are still able to encompass qualities of our true being towards a better understanding of our main role.. The journey is our #startupjourney.
